Depends on the insult if it was more of a teasing one then maybe, if a really harsh serious one then probably not.

She was a 16-year-old Oklahoma high school kid when she landed her first songwriting contract and soon had endorsements from fellow Okies Reba McEntire and Vince Gill. That’s heady stuff, the sort that often produces overheated expectations and disappointment if and when the artist gets to a major label. Not in Elam’s case. Her voice–sensual, sensitive, and passionately full-throated–cuts to the…

Swan Lake became an unexpected popular hit when radical choreographer Matthew Bourne took Tchaikovsky’s traditional ballet by the scruff of the neck and reworked it with a myriad of modern influences and themes to astonishing effect. Seldom have the dark psychological riptides at the heart of so many classical ballets been so brilliantly exposed. The Prince (Scott Ambler) is a wretched and diss…

 25 Under 25: Up-and-coming American Photographers, Volume 2

25 Under 25: Up-and-coming American Photographers, Volume 2

$1.04

A CDS Book25 Under 25: Up-and-Coming American Photographers, Volume 2 showcases 25 more of America’s most promising photographers, 25 years old and younger. Illuminating and sometimes startling, the collection presents work by an emerging generation of photographers at the start of their careers. The first book in the series, published in 2003 by powerHouse Books and CDS Books, was selected as a Best Book of 2003 by Photo District News. This new volume of 25 Under 25 features photographs selected by renowned photographer Sylvia Plachy that explore the theme of “transitions”: what it means to be in-between, in flux, at odds, in a new state of being—personally, locally, nationally, or internationally. The photographers, who must have been born on or after April 28, 1980, were drawn from a widely publicized, nationwide competition run by CDS. 25 Under 25 presents a wide array of photographs reflecting the world as seen through young but sophisticated eyes—the devastation from Hurricane Katrina; the battle-weary soldiers and civilian casualties of the Iraq War; explicit explorations of sexuality; urban and suburban landscapes. These images, whether of people or of what people leave behind, show us that the human imprint is everywhere, moving, altering, desiring, aspiring to permanence. “What we search for is a secret, like the pearl in the ocean, not easily found or given up. We are curious, driven, sometimes outgoing, sometimes introverted; much of who we are is visible in our pictures,” Sylvia Plachy writes in her introduction. “Too often, in the service of politics and commerce, photographs are inadequate or false. But here, we project ourselves into these images filled with insight and compassion and enter their collective memory as a continuation in the history of photography. All of these photographers, each in their own perceptive way, surprise us with their

Excerpt: Katrina Amy Alexandria Alexis Infield Price (born 22 May 1978), more commonly known as Katie Price, previously known as Jordan during her early modelling career, is a British celebrity. She is a businesswoman and former glamour model whose private life is regularly featured in British tabloids and celebrity-based magazines. Katrina Amy Alexandria Alexis Infield was born to Ray Infield and Amy (née Charlier) in Newport, Wales and raised in Brighton, England. Her maternal grandmother is Jewish. When Katie was four, her parents split up. In 1988, her mother married Paul Price, after which Katie took her stepfather’s surname. She has an older brother named Daniel and a maternal half-sister, Sophie (born 1989). Katie was molested by a man when she was seven. She attended secondary school at Blatchington Mill Secondary School which she later revisited for a TV show called “With a Little Help from My Friends”. Her decision to start modelling came after a friend suggested she have some professional photographs done. The pictures were sent to a modelling agency in London and, to her surprise, the agency invited her into their studios for a photo shoot and to discuss a contract. She began appearing on Page Three of The Sun newspaper (topless modelling). Jordan has made frequent appe… More:

Cornbread Nation 4: The Best of Southern Food Writing

Cornbread Nation 4: The Best of Southern Food Writing

$19.95

This new collection in the Southern Foodways Alliance’s popular series serves up a fifty-three-course celebration of southern foods, southern cooking, and the people and traditions behind them. Editors Dale Volberg Reed and John Shelton Reed have combed magazines, newspapers, books, and journals to bring us a "best of" gathering that is certain to satisfy everyone from omnivorous chowhounds to the most discerning student of regional foodways. After an opening celebration of the joys of spring in her natal Virginia by the redoubtable Edna Lewis, the Reeds organize their collection under eight sections exploring Louisiana and the Gulf Coast before and after hurricanes Katrina and Rita, the food and farming of the Carolina Lowcountry, "Sweet Things," southern snacks and fast foods, "Downhome Food," "Downhome Places," and a comparison of southern foods with those of other cultures. In his "This Isn’t the Last Dance," Rick Bragg recounts his experience, many years ago, of a New Orleans jazz funeral and finds hope therein that the unique spirit of New Orleanians will allow them to survive: "I have seen these people dance, laughing, to the edge of a grave. I believe that, now, they will dance back from it." "My passport may be stamped Yankee," writes Jessica B. Harris in her "Living North/Eating South," "but there’s no denying that my stomach and culinary soul and those of many others like me are pure Dixie." In her "Tough Enough: The Muscadine Grape," Simone Wilson explains that the lowly southern fruit has double the heart-healthy resveratrol of French grapes, thus offering the hope of a "southern paradox." The title of Candice Dyer’s brief history says it all: "Scattered, Smothered, Covered, and Chunked: Fifty Years of the Waffle House." In a photo essay, documentarian Amy Evans shows us the world of oystering along northwest

 Decision Points (Limited Edition)

Decision Points (Limited Edition)

$47.7

The limited, deluxe edition of Decision Points is certain to be a collector’s item and a highly sought after piece of Presidential history. Each copy will be hand signed by President Bush. The book itself will be printed on high-quality, acid-free paper and bound in a full cloth case with foil stamping. In addition, the book will have a ribbon marker and a special color photo frontispiece not found in the regular hardcover edition of Decision Points. Each book is individually hand numbered, packed into slipcases, and shrinkwrapped. Decision Points is the extraordinary memoir of America’s 43rd president. Shattering the conventions of political autobiography, George W. Bush offers a strikingly candid journey through the defining decisions of his life. In gripping, never-before-heard detail, President Bush brings readers inside the Texas Governor’s Mansion on the night of the hotly contested 2000 election; aboard Air Force One on 9/11, in the hours after America’s most devastating attack since Pearl Harbor; at the head of the table in the Situation Room in the moments before launching the war in Iraq; and behind the Oval Office desk for his historic and controversial decisions on the financial crisis, Hurricane Katrina, Afghanistan, Iran, and other issues that have shaped the first decade of the 21st century. President Bush writes honestly and directly about his flaws and mistakes, as well as his accomplishments reforming education, treating HIV/AIDS in Africa, and safeguarding the country amid chilling warnings of additional terrorist attacks. He also offers intimate new details on his decision to quit drinking, discovery of faith, and relationship with his family. A groundbreaking new brand of memoir, Decision Points will captivate supporters, surprise critics, and change perspectives on one of the most consequential eras in American history – and the man at the center of

Delirious New Orleans: Manifesto for an Extraordinary American City

Delirious New Orleans: Manifesto for an Extraordinary American City

$21.5

First, a snippet of book history: Rem Koolhaus’s 1978 Delirious New York and Robert Venturi and Denise Scott Brown’s 1972 Learning from Las Vegas became the most influential architecture books of the era with their emphatic embrace of idiosyncratic vernacular buildings and chance-made cityscapes. Stephen Verderber’s Delirious New Orleans recaptures the excitement of those breakthroughs but adds a deep sense of loss, because this photo-essay about New Orleans also documents the devastating destruction of Hurricane Katrina. Visual evidence of a city that cannot be allowed to disappear.
