In Jamaican patois, a gangster is a “shotta” or “shot-caller.” Like The Harder They Come and Third World Cop, Cess Silvera choreographs his crime drama to a reggae beat. Bob Marley’s son Stephen provides the music, while Wyclef Jean drops by as a dealer. The saga begins in late-1970s Kingston. Teenagers Biggs (J.R. Silvera) and Wayne (Carlton Grant Jr.) have had their fill of poverty, so they get …

Robin Williams went through a period in the mid ’80s when he looked like he’d turned into the next Richard Pryor: yet another brilliant standup comic neutered by the script mills of the Hollywood studios. Indeed, Williams seems almost like a spectator in this film, reacting to a supporting cast extremely deep in talent doing what they can with the mediocre script by Brian Doyle-Murray and director…

'One Love' Silk Screen Art Print

‘One Love’ Silk Screen Art Print

$45

Inspired by the lyrics of Bob Marley, and a honeymoon in Jamaica, this design encapsulates my experience of the rich reggae culture. It is printed in a rich red ink to represent love. This print makes an ideal valentines gift, engagement gift or moving in gift for any happy couple in love, but is particularly special to any fan of Jamaica and/or reggae and Bob Marley. The design was generated on computer using a range of icons, fonts and shapes all with a similar hand carved theme. I clearly remember locals hand carving wood on the street and selling them as gifts. It is a similar style to marks made using woodblock print techniques. This is a one colour silk screen print onto a quality Somerset paper, and part of a first edition of only 25. Each print is signed and numbered. A further edition may be printed in 2012. Sold mounted with a white mount. Finished mounted size is approximately 30 x 30cm. Visible print area is 15.5 x 15.5cm. This is unframed with the option to have framed if you wish. Framed size is 33.7cm x 33.7cm. The frame width is 2.5cm. The frame is distressed white and should suit any rustic, modern or vintage inspired kitchen. It is posted flat and well packaged. To view other Valentine’s gifts have a look at our complete range on our storefront.

20th Century Masters - The Millennium Collection: The Best of Steel Pulse

20th Century Masters – The Millennium Collection: The Best of Steel Pulse

$9.99

Steel Pulse is perhaps the greatest reggae band from England. Their smooth, heavy rhythms, melodic tunes, and wonderfully full and tight vocal harmonies made everything they recorded a treat to hear. Add to that David Hinds’ powerful lead vocals and their deeply political lyrics, and you have enough to make a case for them being right up there at the top among homegrown bands in Jamaica, too. There have been many collections of the group’s work, and while 20th Century Masters – Millennium Collection: The Best of Steel Pulse isn’t the most comprehensive study of the band’s career it does a fine job of recapping the highlights. The disc contains three songs from their first three albums on Mango/Island: 1978′s landmark Handsworth Revolution, 1979′s Tribute to the Martyrs, and 1980′s Reggae Fever. The songs are well chosen giving a sample of the band’s political side (“Handsworth Revolution,” “Ku Klux Klan,” and “Drug Squad”) and their poppier side (“Sound System” and the booming “Reggae Fever”). The collection continues with a song from their excellent True Democracy record cut for Elektra in 1981 (“Ravers”), then jumps to the band’s late-’80s/early-’90s work for MCA for two songs: “State of Emergency” and “Taxi Driver.” It also picks up the song they recorded for the soundtrack to Do the Right Thing in 1989, “Can’t Stand It.” These songs are a bit jarring, as they have almost nothing in common with the band’s early roots sound, instead being pop-reggae replete with banks of synths and programmed drums. Still, the songs are catchy and Hinds is as great as ever. Despite glossing over the band’s stay at Elektra, this disc does serve as a pretty solid intro to Steel Pulse. ~ Tim Sendra, Rovi

Chapters: Road Accident Deaths in Jamaica, Lucas Barrett, Jacob Miller, Tenor Saw, Natasja Saad, Winston Anglin, Peter Cargill, Stephen Malcolm. Excerpt: Jacob Miller (May 4, 1952 March 23, 1980) was a Jamaican reggae artist who first recorded with Clement Dodd. While pursuing a prolific solo career, he became the lead singer for reggae group Inner Circle with whom he recorded until his death. His success was cut short when he was killed in a car accident at the age of 27. Jacob Miller was born in Mandeville, central Jamaica on May 4, 1952 to Joan Ashman and Desmond Elliot. At the age of eight he moved to Kingston, Jamaica where he grew up with his maternal grandparents. In Kingston, Miller began spending time at popular studios including Clement Dodds Studio One. He recorded three songs for Dodd, including Love is a Message in 1968, which the Swaby brothers, (Horace, later called Augustus Pablo, and Garth) played at their Rockers Sound System. While the song did not garner much success nor maintain Dodds attention in Miller, it resulted in Pablos sustained interest in Miller. After the brothers launched their own label in 1972, Pablo recorded a version of Love is a Message named Keep on Knocking in 1974. In the next year and a half Miller recorded five more songs for Pablo, Baby I Love You So, False Rasta, Who Say Jah No Dread, Each One Teach One, and Girl Named Pat, each of which became a Rockers classic with King Tubby dubs on their b-sides. These singles developed Millers reputation and ultimately drew Inner Circle to hire him as a replacement lead singer. Inner Circle was an emerging reggae group made popular playing covers of American Top 40 hits. Band leader Roger Lewis said Jacob Miller was always happy and jovial. He always made jokes. Used – I guess I’ve always had a love for poems, nursery rhymes, stories, lyrics, and music. From my early childhood in my native Jamaica to when I came to England as a nine year old in the late sixties catchy and rhymed language got my attention. I recall my first poem which I turned into a song when I was in the Reggae band Malaika which later became Exile Intact, called What A Pressure’. Part of it goes something like this: Me walk round town, Me start to frown, Me feel like a clown, Cause me
