“Violence begins to mend what was broken.” Boy, how he does it. Choosing not to borrow the pinky ring flash of the Underworld and but rather good old fashioned eye for eye justice, singer Randy Blythe croaks savagely though “Omerta.” Backed by a healthy dose of lumbering menace, the song is sung as if by vengeance itself. Violence begetting violence is a constant on this album, both in music an…

Situated on the south bank of the Grand Canal , it gives its name to one of the three bridges across the canal, the Ponte dell’Accademia , and to the boat landing station for the vaporetto water bus. It was originally created as an art school.History L’Accademia di Belle Arti di Venezia was founded in 1750 by the Venetian Senate as Venice s school of painting, sculpture, and architecture. Installed as its first president was Giambattista Piazzetta , with other advisors Giambattista Pittoni and Gianmaria Morlaiter. The aim was to replicate official institutions which had existed for many years in other major artistic centers including Rome (Accademia di San Luca ), Florence, Milan, and Bologna (Accademia Clementina). It was one of the first institutions to study art restoration starting in 1777 with Pietro Edwards, and formalized by 1819 as a course. Among teachers at the Academy in past and modern times were Tiepolo , Hayez , Nono, Ettore Tito , Arturo Martini , Alberto Viani, Carlo Scarpa , Afro, Santomaso, and Emilio Vedova .The

Excerpt: Detail of Niccolò da TolentinoThe Battle of San Romano is a set of three paintings by the Florentine painter Paolo Uccello depicting events that took place at the battle of San Romano in 1432. The paintings are in tempera on wooden panels, each over 3 metres long, and were commissioned sometime around 1356 by Cosimo de’ Medici, to decorate the newly built Medici Palace. They are significant as revealing the development of linear perspective in early Italian Renaissance painting, and are unusual as a major secular commission. The paintings were much admired in the 15th century. They are now divided between three collections, the National Gallery, London, the Galleria degli Uffizi and the Musée du Louvre, Paris. The three paintings (from left to right) are: The Uffizi panel was probably designed to be the central painting of the triptych and is the only one signed by the artist. The sequence most widely agreed among art historians is: London, Uffizi, Louvre, although others have been proposed. They may represent different times of day: dawn (London), mid-day (Paris) and dusk (Uffizi) – the battle lasted eight hours. In the London painting, Niccolò da Tolentino, with his large gold and red patterned hat, is seen leading the Florentine cavalry. In the foreground, broken lances and a dead soldier are carefully aligned, so as to create an impression of perspective. The three paintings were designed to be hung high on three different walls of a room, and the perspective designed with that height in mind, which accounts for many apparent anomalies in the perspective when seen in photos or at normal gallery height. Many areas of the paintings were covered with gold and silver leaf. While the gold leaf, such as that found on the decorations of the

Excerpt: The Museo de la Secretaría de Hacienda y Crédito Público is an art museum located in the historic center of Mexico City. It is housed in what was the Palacio del Arzobispado (Palace of the Archbishopric), built in 1530 under Friar Juan de Zumárraga on the base of the destroyed pyramid dedicated to the Aztec god Tezcatlipoca. It remained the archbishphoric until 1867 when the Finance Ministry Accountancy Department was established there. The modern museum houses an exhibit dedicated to this god as well as a large art collection. The building was the colonial archbishop’s palace and contains two stone-columned courtyards. In 1530, Friar Juan de Zumárraga became the first archbishop of New Spain, which at that time included most of the Americas and the Philippines. He decided to place the see in two houses near where the cathedral would later be built. After initial adaptation, two structures were added: one to cast bells and the other served as a prison. The structure continued to be modified until 1771 when it attained the appearance still seen today. The complex is topped by a cornice on with inverted arches are combined with merlons. Two estipite columns flank the bay of the portal, through which the highest ecclesiastical authorities of colonial times once passed. Remnants of the pyramid of Tezcatlipoca can be seen on the ground floor. This is because of a restoration project concluded in 1997. Along with restoring the colonial building, two excavations were carried out to expose details of the pre-Hispanic structures. Imprisoned here was one of the first conspriators for Mexican Independence, Francisco Primo de Verdad y Ramos, who died here in 1808. Interior patio of the SHCP Museum. Excerpt: Likely composed in the 1580s by Philip Sidney , Astrophel and Stella is an English sonnet sequence containing 108 sonnets and 11 songs. The name derives from the two Greek words, ‘aster’ (star) and ‘phil’ (lover), and the Latin word ‘stella’ meaning star. Thus Astrophel is the star lover, and Stella is his star. Sidney partly nativized the key features of his Italian model Petrarch , including an ongoing but partly obscure narrative, the philosophical trappings of the poet in relation to love and desire, and musings on the art of poetic creation. Sidney also adopts the Petrarchan rhyme scheme , though he uses it with such freedom that fifteen variants are employed. Some have suggested that the love represented within the sequence may be a literal one as Sidney evidently connects Astrophel to himself and Stella to Penelope Rich , the wife of a courtier. Payne and Hunter suggest that modern criticism, though not explicitly rejecting this connection, leans more towards the viewpoint that writers happily create a poetic persona, artificial and distinct from themselves. Publishing history Many of the poems were circulated in manuscript form before the first edition was printed by Thomas Newman in 1591, five years after Sidney’s death. This edition included ten of Sidney’s songs, a preface by Thomas Nashe and verses from other poets including Thomas Campion , Samuel Daniel and the Earl of Oxford . The text was allegedly copied down by a man in the employ of one of Sidney’s associates, thus it was full of errors and misreadings that eventually led to Sidney’s friends ensuring that the unsold copies were impounded. Newman printed a second version later in the year, and though the text was more accurate it was still flawed. The version of Astrophel and Stella commonly used is found in

Excerpt: The Biblioteca Nacional de España (‘National Library of Spain’) is a major public library , the largest in Spain. It is located in Madrid , on the Paseo de Recoletos .History The library was founded by King Philip V in 1712 as the Palace Public Library (Biblioteca Pública de Palacio). The Royal Letters Patent that he granted, the predecessor of the current legal deposit requirement, made it mandatory for printers to submit a copy of every book printed in Spain to the library. In 1836, the library’s status as Crown property was revoked and ownership was transferred to the Ministry of Governance (Ministerio de la Gobernación). At the same time, it was renamed the Biblioteca Nacional.BuildingDuring the 19th century, confiscations, purchases and donations enabled the BN to acquire the majority of the antique and valuable books that it currently holds. On March 16, 1896, the Biblioteca Nacional opened to the public in the same building in which it is currently housed and included a vast Reading Room on the main floor designed to hold 320 readers. In 1931 the Reading Room was reorganised, providing it with a major collection of reference works, and the General Reading Room was created to cater for students, workers and general readers.During the Spanish Civil War close to 500,000 volumes were collected by the Confiscation Committee (Junta de Incautación) and stored in the Biblioteca Nacional to safeguard works of art and books held until then in religious establishments, palaces and
